44 Stanley Avenue - one of Jozi´s best kept secrets

It is hard to think that this urban chick place once were a Automobile Association Garage. When the company closed down the building was a subject of vandalism. Some developers managed to save the beautiful building  before it collapsed and have created an unique, hip place with an industrial and historical feel. There are plenty of charming boutiques, restaurant and cafés.

The best coffee is served at "Bean there" (picture below)!

Urban oasis

Art on main. Just like New York in the 1960´s "Arts on main" is a creative space of converted old industrial buildings in the city centre. Artists need for space were the driving factor for these conversions both in New York and in Johannesburg. In many cases it seems like artists are the starting point to what areas that are becoming gentrified and popular. And then they move on to find another space. Where will the next urban oasis be?

Nelson Mandela square in Sandton. The square was renamed Nelson Mandela square in 2004 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the shopping complex but also to celebrate the first decade of democracy in South Africa. The statue of the dancing Nelson Mandela is six metres high and sculptured by Kobus Hattingh.
